Pembrokeshire Woman Thanks Lifesaving Helicopter Charity
A 22-year-old woman has thanked the helicopter charity which flew to her aid a year ago, and saved her life.
In October 2015, Becki Lutwyche was involved in a serious road traffic collision in west Wales, after her car lost control on a wet road.
The Behaviour Analysis Therapist was left fighting for her life – suffering many broken bones, a dislocated hip, a shattered pelvis, nerve damage and a brain haemorrhage.
Wales Air Ambulance flew to her aid, giving her emergency treatment at the roadside before airlifting her to Morriston hospital.
Becki thinks that the care of the Welsh helicopter charity is responsible for her recovery from the accident.
Becki said: “The quick response from Wales Air Ambulance and the fast travel time to Morriston hospital saved my life.
“I will be forever grateful.”
The therapist from Pembrokeshire did not know that Wales Air Ambulance was a charity before she was airlifted.
Wales Air Ambulance relies on kind donations and support to keep its helicopters flying across Wales, with each lifesaving mission costed around £1,500.
“I had no idea that the service was a charitable organisation.
“I am more grateful than I can put into words. Without their quick response and treatment, my fairly successful recovery could have ended in a very different way.
“I now appreciate the importance of awareness and donations to the cause. As without them, many people wouldn’t be here today.”, Becki said.
The Welsh helicopter charity operates 365 days a year, and needs to raise £6 million every year to fund its lifesaving missions.
The advanced kit and consultant-level doctors on board the charity’s helicopters mean that they can bring the A&E department to the patient, providing emergency treatment at the roadside before airlifting them to the specialist care they need.
Since the accident last year, Becki’s mother, Joanne Lutwyche, has been fundraising for Wales Air Ambulance, hosting a Summer Garden Show and New Year’s Day swim in aid of the charity.
Mark Stevens, Wales Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager, said: “We are so happy to hear the Becki is recovering so well after the accident.
“As a charity, it means a lot to us to hear how our patients are getting on.
“Becki’s mother has been doing some amazing fundraising for us, and it support from people like her, that allows us to continue our lifesaving missions across Wales.”
