Powys unveils its first extra care scheme in Newtown

A £8m flagship care scheme in Newtown has impressed local dignitaries when they visited the development recently. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The dignitaries were joined by Shayne Hembrow, Deputy Chief Executive & Commercial Director of Wales & West Housing when they visited the site, which is due for completion this Autumn. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Wales & West Housing contracted Anwyl Construction to provide 48 apartments for affordable rent for people with care and support needs in partnership with Powys County Council. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The development is the third extra care scheme being built by Wales & West Housing, and follows the award-winning Nant y Mor extra care scheme in Denbighshire, and Llys Jasmine in Flintshire. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Shayne Hembrow, Deputy Chief Executive & Commercial Director of Wales & West Housing, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Powys County Council to bring extra care housing to the county. This scheme will provide much needed, high quality accommodation backed up by 24 hour on-site care and support for adults. Wales & West Housing believes in making a difference to people’s lives, homes and communities and Newtown’s extra care scheme will offer an excellent option currently unavailable to the people of Powys.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Darren Mayor, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “I’m very impressed with this scheme that will not only provide extra care for those living in Powys but will also provide work and training opportunities for local people.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Tom Anwyl, Director of contractors Anwyl Construction, said: “We are delighted to be working again with Wales & West Housing and with Powys County Council on a very significant development for this area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We have a long-standing relationship with Wales & West Housing and last year we won a UK award for a flagship extra-care home at Mold, in Flintshire. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Llys Glan-yr-Afon will not only provide high quality facilities for local people here in Newtown but it will also provide important employment and investment in the Mid Wales economy.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
