Suggest A Name For Brecon Facility
Powys residents are being asked for ideas for the name of Brecon’s new museum and library cultural hub due to open in the town next year.
Demolition and enabling work on the town centre project centred on the Grade II* listed Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery is already underway and the new facility is scheduled to open in the summer of 2018.
The project, which has already been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant, will see the restoration and refurbishment of the museum and art gallery along with a new library, community and education facilities and a tourist information base for Brecon.
Cabinet Member for Property, Councillor Rosemarie Harris said: “Visitors to the town will see that work is already underway and that this iconic project is a reality. It is inevitable that the project will attract public interest and we feel residents should have a voice in naming what will become a key feature in the town.
“Some names, such as Beacon and Cultural Hub, are already used locally so we feel it is time to have a recognised title that can be used in future to market the facility as a cultural attraction for the town, surrounding area and the county as a whole.
“We are asking for suggestions to be submitted to Brecon Library by February 14 so that a shortlist of nominations can be submitted to the Project Board for consideration.
“We hope that the public and all those interested in the project, particularly our funding partners, will get involved so that everyone can feel they have had a voice in the naming of the centre,” she added.
Entries should be to the library email address library@powys.gov.uk or handed in at the desk at Brecon Library by February 14.
