Hendre Lake Duck Loses Life Due To Fishing Litter

An Aylesbury duck lost its life in tragic circumstances after becoming trapped in fishing litter in Hendre Lake, in the St Mellons area of Cardiff. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

RSPCA Cymru attempted to rescue the bird on Friday 30 December – from water near Cypress Drive. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

An RSPCA inspector and animal collection officer rushed to the duck’s aid, after its plight was reported to the charity. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

However, despite entering the lake in a full water technicians kit, and rescuing the animal, the duck’s injuries were too severe and it had to be put to sleep. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The RSPCA has said the sad incident acts as an important reminder as to the dangers fishing litter poses to wildlife, with the public reminded of the importance of disposing of waste appropriately. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Emma Smith, RSPCA inspector, said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This poor duck had become trapped within fishing litter on the island, and was struggling to pull away. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Whilst we were able to reach the duck, we found its injuries were sadly too severe, and it had to be put to sleep to avoid further pain and suffering. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Unfortunately, injury and death is caused to wild animals every year by fishing litter – with this poor Aylesbury duck feeling the consequences. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
