Conwy Bridge Refurbishment Project Joins National Civil Engineering Campaign
The refurbishment work to Conwy Bridge is the latest project to join the national #thisiscivilengineering public awareness campaign being run by The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
The campaign showcases different sectors of civil engineering and allows the general public to make links between the civil engineering that they can see taking place and the benefits that it will bring to their homes and communities.
Conwy County Borough Council’s Flood Risk and Infrastructure team is currently refurbishing the 1958 road bridge working with contractor GABRE (UK). It is a short term project due for completion by the end of August and involves the scaffolding out and encapsulation of the structure prior to addressing areas of corrosion and a complete repaint.
The North Wales Chairman of ICE Wales Cymru branch Peter Jones and Honorary Secretary John Mather were on hand on Wednesday to unfurl a campaign banner on the bridge with representatives of Conwy County Borough Council Geraint Edwards, Head of Environment, Roads & Facilities, and Dyfed Rowlands, Flood Risk and Infrastructure Manager.
Keith Jones, Director ICE Wales Cymru said: “I am pleased that Conwy Bridge in its iconic Welsh setting, beside the World Heritage Site of Conwy Castle and the Telford and Stephenson bridges over the Conwy River, will help us demonstrate the benefits of civil engineering. We need to take every opportunity to highlight such infrastructure projects to show what civil engineering is about and to encourage young people into the profession for the continued benefit of society.
Cllr Dave Cowans, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Environment and Sustainability, said, “The refurbishment of the historic Conwy Bridge is an important project for Conwy County and it’s great to be able to display this banner which highlights the importance that this kind of Civil Engineering work has in our communities.”
