Gypsy and traveller assessment submitted to Welsh Government
The Council has completed an assessment of gypsy and traveller accommodation and has presented its findings to the Welsh Government.
All local authorities are required to undertake an up-to-date assessment and the 2015-16 assessment was carried out jointly with Denbighshire Council.
This was as a result of the 2013 assessment that called for a shared transit site for the two authorities, because a high proportion of unauthorised encampments occur in the north of the county across the border area.
A residential site is currently being built at Old Bangor Road in Conwy, but the county doesn’t currently have an authorised transit sites for gypsies and travellers.
Cllr Sue Lloyd-Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “The latest assessment has revealed a clear need for a transit site given the frequency of unauthorised encampments.
“Guidance from the Welsh Government makes it clear that authorities should consider a regional approach to developing new gypsy and traveller transit sites and my colleagues on the Cabinet have agreed that we continue with this approach.”
Conwy County Borough Council has agreed to continue its joint approach to developing new gypsy and traveller transit sites along its border with Denbighshire.
