New Refuse Collections To Begin In September
Changes in Conwy’s refuse collections (the black wheelie bin) will be introduced in phases across the county during September 2016, with residents receiving details about their new collection schedule over the next couple of weeks.
Councillor Dave Cowans explained, “We want to launch this initiative at the right time with minimal disruption, which is why the new collection schedule will begin in September following the August Bank Holiday and the end of the school holidays.
“This is a great opportunity for all residents to review their recycling habits and make sure that everything that can be recycled, is being recycled. In Conwy, over half of the average household wheelie bin is incorrectly filled with recycling and food waste which is collected separately every week. Our teams are available if you need any advice or support.”
Information packs will be sent to households in the post from 22 August onwards and provide information about the collection changes along with a new collection calendar.
Households are reminded that:
- Only the refuse collection will change.
- Recycling and food waste will still be collected every week.
- Garden waste, textiles and small electrical items will be collected every fortnight.
- A separate nappy collection service will be available upon registration.
- Additional recycling containers are available free of charge upon request.
An initial trial to introduce refuse collections for residents every 4 weeks will also be launched at the same time, as agreed by Conwy’s Cabinet earlier this year. This 4-weekly trial will include all households who currently have Monday as their refuse collection day.
All other collection days will move to the 3-weekly schedule.
Additional Information:
The decision to change bin collections was made by the Cabinet on 23rd February 2016 following a year-long review of householders’ recycling and waste habits.
The review found that over half the items placed into wheelie bins should have been recycled – causing a waste of £1.6m every year.
The review included a survey of every household in Conwy. More than 11,000 householders replied, with the majority agreeing that the Council should take steps to reduce waste. Respondents also confirmed that they could manage accordingly if refuse was collected less frequently and recycling collected weekly.
To get ready for the changes, you can:
Download the Conwy App – Conwy’s Recycling App filled with helpful tools, information and even a collection day reminder; available for iOS and Android devices at www.conwy.gov.uk/conwyapp
Request extra recycling containers if you produce large amounts of recyclables.
Make sure you recycle all your food waste. Leftovers, peelings, teabags and kitchen roll can all be recycled in your food waste caddy.
