Help offered to Denbighshire food producers over new legislation

Denbighshire County Council is encouraging food producers and packers to contact them if they are unsure of new legislation. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Mandatory nutrition labelling for pre-packed food came into force in December and the Council wants to help businesses communicate this information correctly. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The legislation will affect the majority of businesses producing pre-packed foods and although some packers have had food with this information on their label for a while, others will find this requirement new. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

There is an exemption for small artisan packers. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A Council spokesman said: “The existing food regulations make it a mandatory requirement for pre-packed foods to be labelled with the energy value and kilocalories and the amounts of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugar, protein and salt. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The information and any supplementary nutrients should appear directly on the package or on a label attached to the food in a clear format for consumers to understand.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Denbighshire’s Food Team is considering arranging a business seminar to explain how these changes can be achieved if there is sufficient interest from local businesses. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
