Memories of Ysgol Friars in an exhibition at Storiel

Do you have memories to share about your time in school at Ysgol Friars? Storiel, Gwynedd museum and gallery in Bangor are preparing an exhibition on the history of Friars School which will open in March. Storiel are eager for people to get in touch with stories of their time at the school. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The exhibition will celebrate 460 years since establishing the school back in 1557, this is one of the oldest schools in Wales. The exhibition will include early history and photos of the school as well as some more recent stories. Storiel would like to encourage you to share your stories if you’ve spent a period of time at Friars as a pupil or a member of staff in order to include interesting stories and facts in the exhibition. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The exhibition is being put together with members of The Old Dominicans Association, the schools’ former pupils association. The name of this Society originates from the original Dominican Brothers who established Friars schools in the Hirael area. The society’s membership is thriving with former pupils from all over the world. Members of the society meet regularly to keep in touch with their friends. They also build a relationship with the school and their current pupils. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Councillor Mandy Williams-Davies, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for the arts said: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We’re happy that Storiel continues to create innovative and relative exhibitions which contribute to the memories of the County and relating to Gwynedd residents whilst offering artistic experiences free of charge in Gwynedd. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Former pupils of Friars School and Girls Grammar School which is Ysgol Tryfan today are more than welcome to get in touch with their tales and information. I’m sure this would enrich the exhibition through placing personal experiences of Gwynedd residents central to the work.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
