Bridgend County Borough is celebrating its best ever set of GCSE results, with local examination success improving for the fifth year in a row. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The initial school returns for all examination boards show that the number of GCSE students who have achieved at least five A* – C grades in both English (or Welsh First Language) and Mathematics (the level two threshold) has increased to 61.1 per cent, which is a 2.3 per cent rise on last year’s results. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Across the county borough, early indications based on WJEC results only suggest that the overall percentage of pupils who gained A* – G grades is 98.1 per cent. The county-wide percentage of students who collected grades at A* – C has risen two per cent to 67.2 per cent, while an impressive 19.4 per cent achieved either an A* or A grade. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Councillor Huw David, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “These are Bridgend County Borough’s best ever GCSE results and I’m thrilled that we have bucked the UK trend by posting such impressive overall results. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“I am delighted with the continued success enjoyed by so many young people and I hope that they have achieved the results they wanted as they look towards options for higher education, training and employment. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“For anyone whose results weren’t quite what they expected, I would urge them to access the wide range of advice and support that is available to help them make the right decision. Speak to your school, Bridgend College or Careers Wales for more information. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“There have been numerous success stories and I would like to thank the teaching and support staff in all of our schools as their dedication to our young people’s academic and social development is exceptional.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd Headteacher, Meurig Jones said: “We are very proud of today’s GCSE results – the best in the history of the school! This is a culmination of the hard work of pupils and staff and the tireless support of parents over the past five years. These results follow the success of our A level results last week and this cohort promises to break another record in two years time! I wish to congratulate everyone on our success.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Pencoed Headteacher, David George said: “Huge congratulations to the pupils of Pencoed Comprehensive School on the best ever GCSE examination results including English and Mathematics. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“At Pencoed Comprehensive School we pride ourselves on being an inclusive school, supporting pupils of all levels of ability. As one of three schools in Bridgend with a resource base for pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties, we are delighted to report fantastic results for our first Year 11 MLD cohort. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“2016 has also seen the best ever results for more able pupils at the school, with many students achieving five A* – A grades at GCSE. There have been superb individual achievements, including 19 students who achieved at least five A*/ A grades. Congratulations to all of our pupils, parents, staff and governors on an excellent set of results this year.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Congratulating pupils, Bryntirion Comprehensive School Head teacher Nick Brain said: “It is wonderful to report such outstanding results once again and we are incredibly proud to celebrate the fantastic achievements of all of our Year 11 students. These results reflect the hard work and commitment of students, parents and teachers to achieve results of the highest standard. Congratulations to all and good luck for the future.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Delighted Cynffig Comprehensive School Head teacher Hannah Castle said: “Three consecutive years of improved performance have secured our students the brightest of futures. Once again, Cynffig students and staff have surpassed expectations.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Brynteg Headteacher, David Jenkins stated: “We are very pleased with this year’s GCSE results. They confirm the trend of improvement within the school and we congratulate all of our students and staff on the results. Their hard work has once again been rewarded. Twenty two students achieved nine or more A*/A grades.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

It is important to note that some of the county wide statistics are based on WJEC GCSE results only and should therefore be treated with a degree of caution, as schools will have entered varying, but possibly significant, proportions of students for GCSE’s with other examination boards. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
