Keep Poultry Indoors And Report Dead Birds
Residents throughout Bridgend County Borough are being urged to take steps to help guard against a possible spread of Avian Flu.
It follows outbreaks of the H5N8 strain among poultry and wild birds in several European countries, and the establishment of an all-Wales ‘Avian Flu prevention zone’ by Welsh Government.
No cases have been found in the UK and the threat to human health remains very low.
Both the prevention zone and the issuing of advice from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have been actioned purely as a precautionary measure.
Domestic and farmed poultry
The all-Wales prevention zone, which is in place between now and 6 January 2017, is designed to help maintain strong bio-security for the duration of the European outbreak.
It requires people who own domestic chickens, turkeys, ducks or geese to keep them indoors with immediate effect.
Where this is not practical, steps need to be taken to prevent them from coming into contact with wild birds and other wildlife.
Keepers of farmed geese, gamebirds and other captive birds should also take practical steps to ensure they are separate from wild birds.
Wild birds and waterfowl
Anyone who spots five or more dead birds at a single location should report it immediately to DEFRA on the details below.
You should also contact DEFRA if you discover any dead waterfowl such as swans, geese or ducks.
