Green Space In Ely Opened As Queen Elizabeth II Field

A green space in Ely, Cardiff has opened as part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields challenge which demonstrates the council’s commitment to the protection of public open space. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The area adjacent to Hwyel Dda School was one of seven green spaces in Cardiff protected forever by a deed of dedication with Fields in Trust, in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and as a legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The council has undertaken significant works in order to bring what is a former school playing field into use for the local community to enjoy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

To mark the opening a ceremony has been held and marked by the planting of a tree and the provision of a plaque supplied by Fields in Trust. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, said: “This green space will be a valuable asset for the community to enjoy and I’m pleased that the council has been able to provide and protect it for current and future generations” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The deed of dedication means that any plans to develop or dispose of it require the consent of Fields in Trust. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhodri Edwards, Manager, Fields in Trust Cymru said “We are delighted that Cardiff Council has shown how much they value this green space by protecting it forever with Fields in Trust.
