North Cardiff Community Is Coming Together To Raise Awareness Of Organisations

A second North Cardiff community is coming together to raise awareness of organisations, businesses and groups that provide services to people in their local area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Rhiwbina Gets Together is being organised by the City of Cardiff Council’s Preventative Services team, following the success of the Llanishen Gets Together event last October. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The event, which aims to raise awareness of the services and activities available locally, promotes community spirit and ensures local public services are integrated more effectively. It will be held at Rhiwbina Primary School on Saturday, 18th February, 11am – 2.30pm. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cabinet Member for Housing, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Susan Elsmore, said: “Llanishen Gets Together was a great success and we are now looking to replicate that in Rhiwbina. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“It’s all part of an awareness raising drive to help people access information and a wide range of activities and services that already exist in their communities, making sure they know about those services, encourage people to use them and ensure that services work together to achieve the best outcome for individuals. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We want to help people to live independently in their own communities for as long as possible, to remain active and avoid isolation and make the most of what their area has to offer.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Figures show that North Cardiff has the highest percentage of people living with dementia in the city with one in 77 (1.3%) compared to about one in 104 people (0.96%) for the wider city. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A range of the City Council’s public service partners and local organisations and charities will be at the Rhiwbina Gets Together event to promote local activities and services. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

There will also be a talk about the Dementia Friends initiative which encourages members of the public to sign up for awareness training to recognise and learn how to support the needs of people living with dementia, as well as information on recreational activities for people in the community. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Elsmore added: “With an increasing ageing population and the continued budgetary challenges facing all public services, it’s imperative that we work together to transform services. Rhiwbina Gets Together will be another excellent opportunity for people, young and old, in North Cardiff to find out about services which could benefit them greatly.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
