The Love Where You Live Campaign Is Back For The New Year

The Love Where You Live campaign is back for the New Year and last week 6.2 tonnes of waste was removed from Riverside. The team will now be hitting the streets of Cathays from Monday January 16 until Friday January 20. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Since the scheme began in September 2016, over 65 tonnes of additional waste has been taken off the streets in the eight inner wards of the city. This is on top of routine cleansing operations in each area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Love Where You Live Campaign has been designed to work with community groups, so we can make better use of the resources available to keep these areas of the city clean and tidy. Additional resources have also been targeted in the outer wards to improve the cleanliness of all areas of the city. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Bob Derbyshire, Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Environment has endorsed the campaign and publically thanked all community groups and individuals that give their time to help the Council clean up after the minority of people that are ruining the environment for the many. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Derbyshire, said: “Littering is completely unnecessary. Our message to everyone is use the litter bins provided, or please take your litter home with you. We are making the best use of the resources we have available to keep each area of the city clean and tidy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“I am very pleased that residents across Cardiff are giving up their own time to help us with the campaign. The feedback we have had is very positive, increasing community spirit and giving residents a true sense of pride and achievement when the work is complete.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Last week between January 9 and January 13, the Neighbourhood Services Team worked in parts of Riverside and carried out the following work: ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

• 27 streets/lanes were deep cleaned
• 290 out of 410 gullies were cleansed
• 15 pavement defects were repaired ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The City Council’s enforcement team were also operating in the area – with four educational house visits to teach residents about their recycling, nine residents were being investigated for allowing waste to build up in the front of their property, four notices were issued for the incorrect presentation of waste and the waste from seventeen households were searched but no evidence was found. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Bob Derbyshire continued: “This week’s additional cleaning will take place in Cathays and we will be targeting 29 streets. As well as removing litter, the teams cleanse gullies, clean street road signs and fix any issues identified with the pavements, roads or street furniture as well as fixing street lights ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
