Waste Operative Nearly Run Over By Dangerous Driver

The City of Cardiff Council is appealing to all motorists to be patient when driving behind waste collection vehicles – after a council operative was nearly run over on the pavement. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

shows a vehicle overtaking on the pavement in the early evening and nearly running over a waste operative in the Grove, off Wentloog Road in Rumney. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Bob Derbyshire, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “This is the second incident that has taken place in the last few months. The CCTV footage shows a car clipping the operative’s foot, as they overtake on the pavement and it could have been far worse. If any of the residents had walked out of their front garden when this incident happened they could have also been seriously hurt. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Everyone needs to have their waste collected, so vehicles have to drive down narrow streets as well. We ask all motorists to drive with due care and attention and think before they act. Next time, it could be far worse so we are keen to send out the message to everyone that driving like this is completely unacceptable, they are putting our officers at risk as they are carrying out their job. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“Please don’t put anyone’s life in danger by driving recklessly – imagine breaking the news to someone’s family that something awful had happened because some fool had thought they had the right to drive on the pavement.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
