Cardiff Met Students And Alumni Gear Up For Start Of 6 Nations
The Wales Women’s Six Nations Rugby Squad will kick off their tournament this weekend in a match against Italy tomorrow (Saturday 4 February).
As in previous years, the squad features a high number of both current Cardiff Metropolitan University students and alumni – ten in total – reinforcing the strong reputation the University has for leading the way in women’s sport.
The team includes current staff member and lecturer in Education Studies, Dyddgu Hywel , who also plays full-back for Wales and The Scarlets.
Second-year student Jasmine Joyce is a winger for Cardiff Met and also The Scarlets. PGCE Art student, Megan York plays as prop for Gwent Dragons and Gemma Rowland – studying an MSc in Strength & Conditioning – plays centre for Gwent Dragons.
Cardiff Met Alumni playing for the Wales squad include hooker and team captain Carys Phillips, who also plays for the Ospreys; Cerys Hale, a prop for the Dragons, Nia Elen Davies, a back row for the Scarlets; Scarlets hooker, Lowri Harries and Sioned Harries, also a back row for the Scarlets.
The players selected have been involved in the Six Nations for a number of years and Cardiff Met consistently has a high number of players selected every year. This year twelve players were selected in total, including the ten women in the Welsh squad and two alumni, Danielle Waterman and Kay Wilson on the England team.
Performance Director of Women’s Rugby, Rhys Edwards said: “It is unique to have so many players from a university on a squad and this is testament to the high performance programme we run at Cardiff Met. Those involved have had excellent training and preparation games in anticipation of the Six Nations.”
Rhys Edwards was the Wales National Coach for six years prior to this year’s campaign.
