Girls Together Launches Wheel Women
Sport Cardiff and Welsh Cycling have joined forces to launch a brand new women’s cycling community in the Welsh capital.
‘Wheel Women’ offers cycling events which build confidence, increase fitness and create an inclusive cycling community for females. It aims to provide rides that are suitable for varying abilities – making sure that everyone can access a ride suitable to their needs.
So far, two rides have taken place in partnership with the HSBC Breeze UK network – an organisation which inspires women to ride for fun and fitness. A total of 49 cyclists took part, taking to the Taff Trail and covering 22 miles.
Wheel Women is part of Sport Cardiff’s Girls Together campaign which was launched in March 2016 to address the need to boost female participation in sport and physical activity. It aims to provide women across Cardiff with a selection of local activities where participants can receive a friendly welcome and get active with other like-minded females.
Sport Cardiff’s Sports Development Coordinator – Women and Girls, Fay Benningwood said: “We are absolutely delighted to be developing our Girls Together work with the Wheel Women initiative. The first two rides were enormously popular and we hope to build upon this success and attract more women to cycling.”
Participant Victoria Pritchard took part in the first two rides and said: “I’ve really enjoyed Wheel Women. It’s a relaxed and friendly group and the leaders are good with directions – it’s a great way to get back into cycling with a lovely group of women.”
Lusi Lawler is studying for an MA in Sport Sociology and Ethics at Cardiff Met and is participating in a student placement with Wheel Women. She commented: “My placement with Sport Cardiff has been an invaluable experience. It is fantastic to have a real input in the development and decision making of this new programme and work in partnership with the national governing body – Welsh Cycling.”
