Gritters Work Round The Clock
Road gritting crews in Carmarthenshire have worked round the clock to keep the county’s primary routes safe.
In the last 24 hours, over 500 tonnes of grit and salt has been spread on priority roads.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s highways crew is continuing to monitor and treat the road network, and is on 24-hour standby to respond to changing weather conditions.
The roads are being treated using the council’s new fleet of 21 new gritters.
Although Carmarthenshire escaped the worst of the snow yesterday and overnight, freezing temperatures have caused widespread ice through the early hours.
Whilst the council has treated the priority routes – including roads leading to hospitals, ambulance stations and fire stations – the message to drivers is to take care on the roads.
Cllr Hazel Evans, Executive Board Member for Environment, said: “Our crews have worked around the clock to respond to weather conditions. Around a third of Carmarthenshire’s road network is treated for snow and ice as a priority. If necessary, secondary routes are also treated, which include important commuter routes and problematic areas of the highway that are not part of the first priority routes.
“Although the weather is now expected to improve, we will continue to monitor and respond if necessary. In the meantime, we ask that drivers take extra care on the roads.”
