Work To Start On New Pedestrian Crossing
Workwill start on a new controlled pedestrian crossing near Ammanford’s Wilko store later this month.
It will replace the existing zebra crossing, improving pedestrian safety and helping to improve traffic flow, easing congestion in the area.
The crossing point will be relocated away from the Wilko store entrance and further back from the level crossing.
A new entrance to Carregamman car park will also be created on the link road between Quay Street and Ffordd William Walker.
Work is scheduled to start on Monday, January 16 and will run until the end of March.
Part of Carregamman car park will be closed whilst the works are carried out and Carregamman Lane will be closed in two phases from Monday, February 6 until Friday, March 10. Access to Hall Street will be maintained throughout the duration of the works, though be it from different directions.
The council has consulted with the local members, the town council and Wilko on the scheme.
Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “The new crossing will be a controlled crossing instead of a zebra crossing, so pedestrians will have to press the button and wait before stepping out on to the road. Not only will this improve safety for pedestrians but it will also help to keep traffic moving during busy periods instead of stop-starting.
“The crossing will also be moved further away from the Wilko entrance and the level crossing, so it will be in a much safer location. There will also be a new car park entrance, again away from the crossing point.
“The works have been timed to take place after the busy Christmas period to minimise disruption to road users as much as possible. We would appreciate your patience and co-operation whilst the works are carried out; drivers may wish to adjust their journey times if possible.”
