First-Aid Training Delivered To 5000 Pupils Throughout Gwent

Back in September 2014, working with St John Cymru Wales, we launched an exciting new initiative which took Community Support Officers into all Primary Schools within Gwent to deliver first aid training to Year 5 pupils. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The training material which is aimed at pupils aged nine and ten was designed by St John Wales and teaches the pupils skills such as calling for the emergency services, recovery position, CPR and choking. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

This scheme is now well into its second year and since it started nearly 5,000 pupils have had a First aid session with their local Community Support Officers. The training offers children basic first aid knowledge and gives them the confidence to act in an emergency situation as well as developing self-esteem and sense of responsibility. Pupils receive an individual certificate and First Aid related puzzles and games to assist in their learning. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The project has been enthusiastically welcomed by local schools, and together, Gwent Police and St John Cymru Wales are taking a step closer to creating a nation of lifesavers and supporting St John Wales’ vision of putting a first aider in every home in Gwent. Chief Superintendent Emma Ackland said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to work within the community, developing life skills in young people and at the same time raising the profile of St John Cymru, hopefully encouraging more people to get involved and be trained in emergency first aid.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
