“Everyone at Newport City Council is saddened by the news of Councillor Townsend’s death. Ed was committed to, and worked tirelessly for, this city. A well-known and respected character, he played a very important role when representing his local constituents and during his time as Deputy Leader of the council. He will be very much missed and our thoughts are with his wife, family, friends and former colleagues.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Councillor Townsend served as a ward member for St Julian’s for almost 12 years. He was Leader of the local Liberal Democrat Group and Deputy Leader of Newport City Council between 2008 and 2012, as part of the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition administration. He also held the position of Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration. Since 2012 he served as the sole representative of the Liberal Democrats on the council. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
