Over 1,600 New Members Love Leisure For Life
Over 1,600 new members all ages and abilities are enjoying unlimited access to leisure, fitness and a healthier way of life, as Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s investment to create the best-possible facilities for all continues.
Of these new memberships, a staggering 1,419 have been taken out at the five leisure centres that, to date, have benefitted from ongoing leisure investment as part of the wider £200m #RCTInvest programme.
And the message to those who have not yet taken advantage of their free gym session, or looked into the benefits of an unlimited, all-inclusive Leisure for Life membership is – what are you waiting for?!
The increase in Leisure for Life memberships confirms the success of the Council’s commitment to invest in leisure to create modern facilities that attract new customers, and is a promising indication of not only the future sustainability of leisure facilities – which residents campaigned so strongly for – but also of a healthier, more active RCT community.
To date, investment has been delivered at:
- Rhondda Sports Centre: New gym, fitness studios, reception and general modernisation.
- Bronwydd Swimming Pool: Replacement of small, outdated gym with a state-of-the-art new facility plus improvements to access and reception.
- Hawthorn Leisure Centre: new gym and refurbished fitness studios.
- Sobell Leisure Centre: Brand new centre as part of the £50m Ynys and Aberdare Community School redevelopment.
- Abercynon Sports Centre: New gym and fitness studio as well as improvements to access, parking, reception and disabled access.
Work is also set to start in the New Year on a new gym at Tonyrefail Leisure Centre and wider improvements linked to the development of the new 3-19 school in Tonyrefail as well as a new 3G, all weather pitch.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture, said: “Nearly 9,000 people of all ages and from all walks of life are now taking advantage of all-inclusive membership to our range of nine leisure centres through Leisure for Life.
“That is a huge number of people who are taking steps towards a healthier and more active way of life. It is incredible that we have welcomed over 1,600 of those new members in the last 11 months alone, no doubt down to the significant investment and impressive modernisation we have carried out at our range of leisure centres.
“To have 1,400 new memberships generated thanks to an improvement of the facilities at just five leisure centres is the proof we need that we made the right decision, to invest to improve, rather than close, our leisure facilities.
“The attraction of the new gyms and fitness facilities has been a draw for people, as has the general ease and affordability of Leisure for Life, which allows you to enjoy the gym, swimming, fitness classes and indoor sports as often as you like at any or all of our leisure centres across the county borough.
“Huge credit must also be given to the leisure staff who have been committed and enthusiastic. They take pride in their centres and work hard to ensure people are aware of the great range of classes, gym opportunities, swimming and sports are on offer – right on peoples’ doorsteps.
“They also work one to one with new customers to help them develop their own personal health and fitness plan
“Our Leisure for Life customers range from children who are learning to swim and enjoying social time in the pool right up to older residents who are loving being in the gym and staying active – with professional athletes, groups of friends and corporate business members in between!
“This is very exciting news for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Leisure Services and now is the time of year when people start thinking about the New Year and what they would like to achieve.
“Whether that is being more social, spending your spare time in a different way, getting fitter, losing weight, recovering from an illness or injury, training for a 5k or just having a great time, Leisure for Life can offer that.”
Leisure for Life membership allows users to access unlimited gym, swim, indoor sports and fitness classes at any or all of the Council’s nine leisure centres, for a fixed monthly price.
There are concessions for junior and senior members, as well as those on qualifying benefits.
Leisure for Life members have exclusive access to online booking, allowing them to secure a space in their favourite fitness class or book a sports court up to seven days in advance via www.rctcbc.gov.uk/leisure.
