RCT Students Are The Best Public Speakers In Wales

Rhondda Cynon Taf students are the best public speakers in Wales – it’s official! ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda has been crowned Welsh National Champions at the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition – a well-established and successful competition organised and promoted by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The competition aims to offer young people experience in speaking on a public platform as a member of a team as well as the opportunity of learning and practising high standards of expression, presentation and appearance. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Ysgol Gyfun Y Cymer Rhondda students Evie Connolly, Elis Macmillan and Seren Farrup took the national title, with Evie being crowned Best Individual Opposer and Best Individual Speaker at the finals, which were held at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “This is a wonderful achievement for the individuals concerned and also everyone associated with Ysgol Gyfun Y Cymer. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“We are so proud that this team is flying the flag for us across the whole of Wales and my congratulations go to Evie, Elis and Seren on their success. This is the latest positive achievement highlighting the talent we have in our schools right across the county borough.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Rotary Youth Speaks competition is open to all schools and college communities, including young people’s community organisations such as Scouts and Girl Guides. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
