Drug Warning Issued After Porthcawl Teen Collapses
Police in Bridgend are reminding young people of the dangers of drugs, after a local teenager collapsed after ingesting a drug believed to be ketamine.
A 15-year-old girl collapsed in the Porthcawl area after taking the drug, which is intended for veterinary use but has become known for its stimulant and psychedelic affects. She was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
A 15-year-old boy from Bridgend was arrested on suspicion of supplying a Class B drug and has been bailed pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Richard Weber said: “The girl concerned is lucky that she was given medical attention so quickly as the consequences of her actions could have been far more serious.
“We cannot stress enough how dangerous ketamine and other controlled drugs are. Those taking drugs can never be sure exactly what they’re taking – what chemicals are contained and what the strength of the drug is – so they are literally gambling with their lives every time.
“While those who achieve the desired effects may feel they are safe to continue taking a substance, they simply never know when they might have an adverse reaction or what long-term damage being caused to their health.
“Drugs are dangerous and our message to youngsters is to avoid them at all costs.
“And if the health risks aren’t enough to deter them, perhaps knowing the law might. Possessing ketamine can land you in prison for up to five years. Supplying the drug carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.”
Following the incident on Friday, January 13th, Schools Liaison Officers will be delivering increased Drug and Alcohol Awareness sessions at schools in the area.
