Rogue Trader Jailed For 27 Months For Defrauding A Cardiff Man Of More Than £23,000.
Martin Flynn, 45, admitted two counts of fraud and will now be subject of a Proceeds of Crime Investigation.
Flynn approached his victim in the street outside his house in Cathays in March last year offering to restore his external stonework.
After gaining his trust, Flynn charged excessive amounts for house repairs and building work that was either overpriced or not completed including £4,000 to restore stone work and £5,700 for new windows.
He then convinced his victim to pay £5,000 to become a silent business partner and asked for a further £3,750 towards a new business van.
The fraud was uncovered by Cardiff CID who were called to investigate a burglary at the victim’s house.
Flynn, from Abergavenny, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday, April 20 and a Proceeds of Crime hearing will take place in July.
Officer in the case Detective Constable Phil Marchant said: “The victim is heartbroken that his savings have been stolen and feels embarrassed that he has been conned.
“While his feelings are understandable he should not feel ashamed. Flynn is a manipulative and convincing individual who took advantage of the victim’s trusting nature and vulnerability.
“The force will now begin an investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act to hopefully get some of the stolen money back.”
As always we would remind householders to be cautious when approached by door to door traders who call without an appointment.
Please be aware of dangers of rogue traders offering services and always get a couple of quotes before agreeing to have work done.
If you feel bullied or harassed into getting work done please call South Wales Police on 101.
Please be alert on behalf of any elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
