Three Men Found Guilty Of ‘Cowardly And Brutal’ Murder
Three men have been found guilty at Cardiff Crown Court of the murder of Lynford Brewster in broad daylight in June 2016.
Dwayne Edgar, 29, from Llanedeyrn, Jake Whelan, 24, from Cardiff and Robert Lainsbury, 23, from Worcester were sentenced today (Wednesday 21st December) to a total of 90 years in prison.
Whelan was sentenced to 32 years, Lainsbury received 30 years and Edgar 28 years imprisonment.
After the sentences were handed down Lynford Brewster’s family paid the following tribute to him:
“Today would have been Lynford’s 30th birthday. Lynford was a loving son, partner, brother and would have been a doting father to his unborn daughter. He is missed everyday by each and every one of us.
“He was murdered in the most cowardly and brutal way in broad daylight in the middle of a housing estate, the three defendants have shown no remorse and to have to hear the evidence and nature of his death played out in the public arena of a Crown Court has been extremely difficult.
“As a family we would like to thank everyone for their support and in particular wish to pass our thanks to the residents of Bryn Fedw, especially those who had the courage to come forward and provide statements and attend Court in very difficult circumstances ensuring that guilty verdicts have been returned against those responsible.
“We would like to thank Mr Coughlin QC, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Investigation Team at South Wales Police for their hard work and also our family liaison officers for their support throughout this investigation.
“As a family we now ask that we are allowed the privacy to reflect on the verdicts and begin to rebuild our lives.”
Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Mark O’Shea said: “Following careful consideration of all of the evidence presented to them the Jury has returned a guilty verdict against Edgar, Whelan and Lainsbury.
“The murder of Lynford Brewster was a brutal and cowardly attack. A pre-meditated murder perpetrated in broad daylight by three men using knives.
“The attack was witnessed by a large number of people many of whom had the courage to try to render first aid to Lynford. This attempt to save Lynford’s life demonstrated the very best of the community spirit within Llanedeyrn and I would like to pay tribute to those individuals involved in trying to render life-saving care.
“During the investigation many residents of Bryn Fedw supported our investigation by providing valuable witness testimony and that ultimately helped secure these convictions.
“I wish to pay tribute to those witnesses and other members of the Llanedeyrn community who supported South Wales Police in this difficult and challenging enquiry.
“Standing up to this type of crime is a partnership between South Wales Police and the communities we serve.
“I would also like to publically extend my condolences to Lynford’s family and to thank them for the help and support they have given to the inquiry and to pay tribute to the quiet dignity they have shown during these proceedings.”
