Two Years’ Jail For Dangerous Barry Driver
A reckless driver who left an elderly pedestrian with life-changing injuries has been jailed.
Anthony John Randall, of Greenacres, Barry, was jailed for two years at Cardiff Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
Forty-one-year-old Randall’s Ford Fiesta struck a stationary vehicle with such force that the vehicle shunted a van behind it. A 76-year-old man was getting out of the van as the collision happened, and sustained serious injuries as he was hit by the van’s door.
The man is still receiving treatment following the collision on Gladstone Road, Barry, on July 13th last year.
At the hearing on Wednesday, Randall was also given a four-year driving ban and will have to sit an extended retest before he can secure another driving licence. He was also ordered to forfeit the car involved in the collision.
Detective Sergeant Chris Grey, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was an horrific collision which left an elderly gentleman with serious injuries, from which he has never fully recovered.
“Randall’s actions that day were extremely reckless and they have had a huge and lasting impact on the victim and his loved ones.
“I am pleased that Randall pleaded guilty to the charges he faced, sparing his victim and his family the further distress of a trial, and I hope his time in prison will afford him the opportunity to think about the serious consequences his actions have had.
“I cannot stress enough how dangerous vehicles can be if they are not driven carefully and with full consideration for other road users and pedestrians.
“Our team has investigated a number of serious collisions in the Barry area alone so we know all too well the devastating impact dangerous driving can have on the community. We want to remind people of their duty to drive carefully and also assure the public that we will leave no stone unturned when it comes to investigating such incidents.”
