Colour Change Lights Installed At Swansea’s Castle Square
Swansea’s Castle Square will soon be lit up in themed colours at night to mark events like St David’s Day, St Patrick’s Day and Cancer Awareness Day.
Colour change technology forms part of new LED lighting columns that have now been installed at the city centre square.
Swansea Council is behind the project.
Designed in aluminium by the council’s public lighting team to fit in with other parts of the city centre, the new columns are sturdy enough to support banners and floral displays.
They’ll also help the council in its drive to renew the city centre’s prestigious Purple Flag status that recognises Swansea for the way the evening and night-time economy is managed.
Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The age and condition of the lighting columns in Castle Square meant they needed replacing, but we didn’t want to replace them on a like-for-like basis because the square deserves better.
“Instead, we’ve designed innovative, energy efficient lighting columns that mean we can do more in the square than ever before. Not only will the new columns allow for the installation of banners and floral displays, but we’ll also be able to remotely change their colour to tie in with events like St David’s Day, Welsh internationals and awareness-raising campaigns.
“Many people have told us that Castle Square looks tired and needs changing, so this is the first step in transforming the area for the benefit of Swansea residents and visitors to the city.”
Feedback in response to a Public Open Space Notice will form part of a Castle Square report to be considered by Swansea Council’s Cabinet in coming months.
Wales’ Six Nations games will be shown live on the square’s big screen. Rob Howley’s men kick-off their campaign against Italy in Rome on Sunday February 5.
