Completion For Multi-Million Pound Flats Upgrade
A multi-million pound upgrade of two Swansea city centre blocks of flats has now been completed.
The £11.8m Swansea Council improvement of the Matthew Street flats in Dyfatty has included the installation of new bathrooms and kitchens for hundreds of residents.
The work also included the refurbishment of the outside of the buildings, as well as the introduction of nine new units of accommodation.
Funded by council rents with financial support from the Welsh Government, the works, giving each of the 120 flats at least a further 30 years of life, were carried out by Interserve.
Other works included new car parking spaces, landscaping, drainage improvements and the resurfacing of access roads.
Cllr Andrea Lewis, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Next Generation Services, said: “Around £260m is planned to be spent on our housing stock in the next three to four years, including work completed in this current financial year, so this major completed project is just one part of a broader investment story that’s benefitting many thousands of people’s lives every day.
“As well as new kitchens and bathrooms that will boost the health and wellbeing of our Matthew Street tenants, the work outside the buildings has improved the look of a key gateway in and out of the city centre, while also weather-proofing the flats for many years to come.
“This project, in combination with others that are either completed, on-going or planned, will help the council reach the Welsh Housing Quality Standard, help tenants tackle fuel poverty and improve the wellbeing of communities across the city.”
Other Matthew Street works included rewiring, new roof coverings, new fire doors and new entrances.
More than 2,400 council homes will also benefit from new kitchens and bathrooms in the 2017/2018 financial year in areas including Cwm Felin Fach, Bonymaen, Llanllienwen, Caemawr, Clase, Birchgrove, Clydach, Craig Cefn Parc, Pontarddulais and Penllergaer.
This follows on from similar works that have been completed in areas including Penlan, Gendros and Waunarlwydd.
