Cwmbran Community Group Transform Local Park
A Cwmbran community group are transforming the former Bowleaze Park in Greenmeadow into a safer, clean, green space for the local community.
The Greenmeadow Community Group started work in the park last week, and have been cutting back vegetation and over growth to open the park up and make it feel less isolated, laying new hedgerows and clearing litter.
They have been supported by Torfaen council’s countryside service, and are planning to plant wild flowers and hold community events later in the year.
David McCarthy, chairman of the group, said: “The Greenmeadow Community Group was set up in 2016 to do something positive in the community in the face of a spate of antisocial behaviour.
“We have done regular litter picks and held a fun day in the park in the summer. We had a huge turnout, so decided that we wanted to focus on the park and turn it into a safer, cleaner environment for the whole community to enjoy.”
Volunteer Lucy Arnold-Matthews said: “It is fantastic to be out doors, in the community I grew up in, learning new skills, making new friends and doing something positive.
“I would urge anyone living in the Greenmeadow area who would like to get involved with the group to look us up on Facebook.”
Councillor Lewis Jones, executive member for regeneration, said: “As part of the council’s corporate plan we have committed to making Torfaen cleaner and greener and to support local groups who want to improve their environment.
“The Greenmeadow Community Group are doing a fantastic job in their community and we are pleased to be able to support them wherever we can.”
