Helping Cancer Patients And Foster Parents – The Impact Of Applied Research In Storytelling
University statement on the Professor of Storytelling and the Director of The George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling:
Jane McCloskey, Dean of Creative Industries, said: “All universities have professors who lead research into new and better practice in the professions in which graduates work.
“The George Ewart Evans Centre’s research is rated as “internationally excellent”. The Centre’s work is pretty important to the cancer patients and foster families it helps, because it enables them to understand and explain their experiences. That’s important to hospitals, schools, and social work teams who are able to work with this feedback to make services better for really vulnerable people. It isn’t about reading children’s books, although teaching through literature is something USW does in successfully training primary teachers for their career.
“The Centre works with other organisations from health boards to the BBC and the MCC on telling their story in new digital media. In the wider world, the ability to tell a story in a compelling way is a key skill across a wide range of University courses that lead to careers: it even wins Oscars, as our creative industries graduates can testify.”
