A UNIVERSITY of South Wales (USW) student has helped a UK team to achieve a top 10 finish in international competition. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Theo Baker, 22, from Newport, was part of the Great Britain at the 2016 World University Golf Championships, which were held in Brive-La-Gaillarde, France, last weekend. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Theo teamed up Mike Howard, from Edinburgh University, and Christopher Maclean, from the University of Stirling, to make up the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) men’s squad at the event. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

After four days of play, the British team came seventh in the competition – which was won by hosts France. The Women’s BUCS team went one better, finishing in sixth. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Ryan Statton, from the Golf Programme at USW, said: “It’s a rare honour for USW to have a representative in the GB team, and Theo did himself and the Golf Programme, and USW Sport proud. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Theo has just completed a Masters in Sports Coaching and, as captain of the University’s first team, has contributed significantly to the University Golf Programme. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“He has now had more experience of what it’s like to play international tournaments, and this will stand him in good stead as he moves forward with his career.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Applications to join the University of South Wales’ golf programme this September are now open. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
