USW Welcomes Prestigious Speakers From The Music Industry
Throughout January, the University of South Wales (USW), will welcome speakers to ‘Music Industry Month’. They will share their wealth of experience from inside the business. The events are free admission and all are welcome to attend.
Andrew Scheps (Monnow Valley Studio, Monmouth) Production Masterclass
Andrew Scheps has an incredible career of achievements, which incorporates a credit list featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adele, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Michael Jackson, Robbie Robertson, Justin Timberlake, Iggy Pop, U2, Jay-Z, and many more, as well as several Grammy Awards.

Joe Hubbard – Bass Masterclass
Joe has been acknowledged by music business insiders as the premier bass guitar teacher in the UK, having taught some of the most prestigious bass players including Pino Palladino, Paul Turner (Jamiroquai), Mike Mondsir (Billy Cobham) and Dave Swift (Jools Holland). He is also a published author having penned one of the bestselling bass guitar books ever, ‘Basslines’ (over 300,000 copies sold worldwide).

Robert Short – Vocal Masterclass
American born, Robert Short has taught voice for over fifteen years. Throughout his career he has won numerous awards including: The Carol Brice Young Artist Award, Oklahoma Opera Guild Young Artist Award, University of Oklahoma Vocal Music Scholarship Award, as well as various other Choral and Solo distinctions and scholarships.

Gill Taylor (Elvis Costello’s Manager), Meet the Manager
Gills extensive industry experience will offer insights how to unlock the key to successful marketing & will explore case study campaigns by way of example throughout this lecture. “Behind every great album is great marketing. Although it might seem that an album is all about the music, how it is branded & marketed holds the key to success.”

Cardiff Songwriters’ Circle (external event)
The first workshop of what will become a regular event on the second Thursday of every month. The opportunity to network, share work in progress songs and get feedback from fellow songwriters in a relaxed and informal environment.

Zervas & Pepper – Songwriting Masterclass
Zervas & Pepper are a folk-rock duo whose luminous, harmonic, laid-back sound is currently making waves on the UK, USA & Ireland Radio stations BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music & RTE as well as a growing presence on the UK live wide circuit. Discovering one another while performing in their home town clubs in Cardiff as solo artists. Finding they had a shared love of harmony heavy evocative folk rock, Zervas & Pepper began writing and recording together. Along with their band they promise elegantly crafted songs that transport their audience with escapist narrative and soaring melodies.

Steve White Drumming workshop
Steve White was born in Bermondsey, South London. He began to show an interest in drumming through a snare drum that was given to him by an uncle at the aged of eight. Throughout Steve’s career he has worked with many successful artists/bands including Paul Weller, The Players, Chad Smith, The Who and many more.

Alun Llwyd & Kevin Tame – Meet the Record Label (Turnstile Music Cate Le Bon, Charlotte Church, Gruff Rhys)
New routes to market. How the notorious Welsh independent label is navigating the music industry and thriving after two decades.
With a rich heritage and even richer catalogue, Turnstile are the embodiment of entrepreneurialism; this session will share insider tips from the sharp end.

Paul Grey – Musicians Union & The Damned Bassist
Paul Grey was the bassist for the Southend-on-Sea teen rockers Eddie and the Hot Rods & In early 1980, he was recruited to join punk rock band The Damned. Paul also sessioned for artists as diverse as Johnny Thunders, Rob Tyner (MC5) and Andrew Ridgeley (Wham!). He knows the industry inside out & now represents the Musicians Union.

Martyn Joseph – Songwriting Masterclass
Martyn Joseph is a powerful singer and songwriter gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics. With a career spanning 30 years, 32 albums, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances, the versatility of his music touches genres of folk, rock, soul, folk funk and Americana, yet somehow all these labels cannot define the spirit of his music.

Gareth Potter (Actor, DJ) – S4C Film screening Gadael Yr Ugeinfed Ganrif (Leaving the 20th Century)
How the whole ‘Cool Cymru’ phenomenon of the 1990’s had its roots in a tiny DIY punk scene from the early 80s & grew to influence the public life of Wales. Exploring how this still resonates in the Wales of 2016. Potter is a very engaging speaker & this session builds on the Turnstile label day.

Romesh Dodangoda – Music Production Masterclass
Romesh Dodangoda is a Record Producer Mixer from Wales, UK and has worked with many successful artists including Motorhead, Bullet for My Valentine, Funeral for a Friend, Kids in Glass Houses and many more. Specialising in Rock/Pop and Metal, Romesh has a production studio in the heart of Cardiff, but also travels around to various studios to work with artists.
