Welsh Ambulance Service Staff Celebrate Graduation From USW

A COHORT of Welsh Ambulance Service staff recently graduated from the University of South Wales with an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The course is designed for healthcare professionals who want to extend the scope of their practice regarding consultation, assessment, diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

It enables them to develop their understanding of altered physiology to effectively assess a patient’s health or ill health status. In addition they studied research methods, influences on current health care practices and independent prescribing. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Those who graduated are Bryn Carwyn Thomas, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner stationed in Porthmadog, David Morris, a Paramedic at Gelli Station, Georgina Cregg Passmore, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner at Llanelli Station, and Jeff Price, Regional Practitioner Educator. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Claire Vaughan, the Trust’s Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “By improving their skills and knowledge, these individuals are seeking to improve the quality of care that we are able to provide to patients across Wales, and their hard work is a credit to them.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Dr Sian Jones, Deputy Head of the School of Care Sciences at the University of South Wales said: “Advanced practice roles are seen as key to the delivery of high level, effective healthcare services across Wales and beyond. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“The MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner contains innovative learning, teaching and assessment strategies supported by state-of-the-art facilities in the University of South Wales Clinical Simulation Centre and has a long and successful track record of preparing practitioners to meet the challenges of providing services at advanced practice levels. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

“This course has been accessed by paramedics employed by the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust since its inception and the School of Care Sciences is pleased and proud to work in collaboration with both these students and the Trust to improve the quality of pre-hospital services to patients across Wales.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
