RSPCA Cymru Urges Public To Give A Circus That Uses Wild Animals A Miss
RSPCA Cymru is calling on the public to give a circus with wild animals, heading to Pwllheli, a miss.
The complex needs of wild animals can never be adequately met in a circus environment with regular transport, cramped and bare temporary housing, forced training and performance all unavoidable realities for the animals.
The circus – which uses wild animals in its performances – will arrive in Pwllheli next week.
RSPCA’s senior scientific officer, specialising in circus animal welfare, Ros Clubb said: “We have major concerns about the welfare of wild animals involved in this, or any other, travelling show, a concern that is clearly shared by a huge number of others in Wales.
“Circuses will only continue to use wild animals if the public continue to pay to see them.
“Because of their temporary nature, travelling shows like this will never be able to keep wild animals in a way that provides acceptable standards of welfare.
“Placing an animal in surroundings unsuitable for the species can cause serious stress and behavioural problems.
“We are urging members of the public in Pwllheli and across Wales to vote with their feet and give this circus that uses wild animals, a miss.”
In October 2015, RSPCA Cymru handed in a petition to the National Assembly for Wales’ Petitions Committee. The petition gained more than 7,900 signatures which called upon the Welsh Government to introduce a long-awaited ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.
The Welsh Government has since commissioned a review that could pave the way to Wales to introduce such a ban.
