Extra Conwy Bridge Refurbishment Work Approved
Conwy’s Cabinet have given the green light to extend the refurbishment work currently taking place on Conwy bridge.
Opened to traffic in 1958, Conwy Bridge carries the A547 over the River Conwy. A project to carry out major repair work on the structure started earlier this year and included addressing corrosion on some of the structural parts and a complete repaint of the bridge.
As work got underway on site, contractors identified further areas of steelwork that had become corroded and would need to be treated in due course.
At a meeting this week (13/09/16) Cabinet agreed to extend the scope of the refurbishment.
Cllr Dave Cowans, Cabinet Member for Highways, Environment & Sustainability said; “We discussed the matter yesterday and my Cabinet colleagues and I decided that, on balance, it would be more efficient and cost effective to carry out these additional works whilst the scaffolding is on site, rather than arrange more work in a couple of years.”
“Conwy Bridge is the largest bridge that we are responsible for and it’s a vital part of the county’s infrastructure. It’s essential that the structure is sound for many years to come.”
Cabinet Members noted the contractor’s approach whereby the majority of the work was taking place beneath or to the side of the road structure, and that every effort had been made to minimise disruption in the area.
