Have Your Say On Active Travel Plans

Newport City Council has improved its cycle and walking routes across the city as part of its commitment to increasing healthy lives through active travel, and now it wants your input on ways to make further improvements. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

So far the council has, with funding from the Welsh Government, completed a series of projects taking in part of the Gwent Levels on the 6km section of an ‘intercity’ cycle route between Newport and Cardiff. An off-road route for walking and cycling linking the M4 and the SDR via the former steel works road, it takes users almost to the boundary with Monmouthshire with plans to extend in the future. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The City Circular Central and Southern project allows residents of Lliswerry, Pill, Victoria and beyond to access central services to the city centre, Friars Walk, bus and train stations, Riverside Park and The Riverfront Theatre, via a completely traffic free route. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Three new bridges are also now incorporated in to the Lliswerry Recreation Ground scheme which provides a shared use route suitable for walkers and cyclists and will complement works to upgrade sports and recreation facilities in the area. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Welsh Government also provided more than £100,000 for improvement works on Bettws Lane to create an off-road route for walkers and cyclists on the northern side of the lane, with new crossing points linking off-road canal routes to each other and also to Newport High School. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The final piece of the jigsaw is along the northern corridor to include Shaftesbury and enhance the routes between the city centre and the settlements to the north of Newport out as far as Caerleon. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

A series of drop-in sessions have been organised so that the public can have their say on the Integrated Network Map, which will be used to plan the city’s active travel schemes for the next 15 years. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
