Berw Road Bridge in Pontypridd to Close for a Week for Corrective Works

A bridge in Pontypridd is set to close for a week for works following a major restoration scheme.
Berw Road Bridge, also known as White Bridge, in Pontypridd will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians to allow corrective works following the structure’s recent major restoration scheme.
White Bridge will be closed from 8am on Monday, August 10, with the closure being removed on or before Sunday, August 16.
The work is being coordinated alongside the demolition of the Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park site.
No traffic management is planned for Berw Road next week.
White Bridge will always be open during any future works affecting traffic on Berw Road.
The listed structure was damaged in Storm Dennis, and Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council worked with Cadw on a restoration scheme that was completed during the summer in 2024.
It included several hundred individual concrete and structural steelwork repairs, bridge deck waterproofing, and replacing the highway drainage system and surfacing.
Following additional repairs and a maintenance inspection last year, an extra
road closure is needed this summer for further corrective work.
Contractor Concrete Repairs Limited needs the closure to safely access the underside of the bridge.
The repairs are being carried out by the original contractor for the restoration scheme with no further cost being applied to the council.
Next week’s White Bridge scheme will include localised repairs to the gunite
applied to the bridge – the protective layer protecting the structure’s concrete.
Corrective works will also take place to paintwork on the underside of the
bridge and parapets while replacement of the deck joint sealant within the
carriageway will be completed, along with a single resurfacing repair.
An alternative route for motorists during the closure, from south of the bridge,
will be via The Parade, West Street, Bridge Street roundabout, Bridge Street
and Berw Road.
In the opposite direction, the alternative route is via Berw Road, Bridge
Street, West Street, Middle Street, Bonvilston Road and The Parade.
The council says access cannot be maintained for emergency service
