Working with partner agencies and night time economy venues, South Wales Police Officers will be out, educating and enforcing the law around alcohol over the Halloween celebrations. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign, is a long standing campaign encouraging people to enjoy nights out whilst tackling excessive levels of drinking in our town and city centres which often leads to violence and increased demand placed on the police, emergency departments and other public services. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

In a survey carried out by Liverpool John Moore University on users of the night time economy throughout South Wales, the number of people who knew it is illegal to purchase alcohol for someone who is clearly drunk increased from 50.3 % to 63.4% between 2015 and 2016. Further, the number of people who correctly reported that it is illegal for a bar server to sell alcohol to someone who is drunk increased from 48% to 62.4%. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner, Alun Michael said: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Halloween is a celebration that has changed dramatically over the last decade. With more people embracing this event and finding new ways of celebrating, it’s important that everyone considers the impact this night has on the community of South Wales. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“2015 saw several Accident and Emergency Departments overrun with people suffering from the affects of alcohol and alcohol related violence. In a time, where the demand that is placed on emergency services can have a real effect on the community of South Wales, it’s important that everyone considers the impact of their actions. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“The #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign aims to tackle several priority areas laid out in the South Wales Police and Crime Reduction Plan, to reduce and prevent crime and anti- social behaviour, protect those most vulnerable and keep South Wales safe. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“South Wales Police Officers will be supported by a range of partner agencies such as Student Volunteers, Drinkaware Club Crew, St John’s Ambulance and local council Licensing Officers.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

South Wales Police Assistant Chief Constable Richard Lewis said: ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Celebrating events is a big part of South Wales. We want everyone to have a great time enjoying Halloween however those that drink excessive amounts, display behaviour that threatens the community of South Wales and break the law, will be dealt with swiftly, South Wales Police takes a zero tolerance approach to incidents involving alcohol which result in anti-social behaviour and/or violence. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“We urge you to drink sensibly, enjoy the festivities and encourage others to do the same.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
