South Wales Police has been praised in the latest report issued by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC). ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

All forces in England and Wales were inspected on how well they are able to predict demand for their services now and in the longer term, and how they manage their resources, especially their officers and staff. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The report, published today, looks at how efficient South Wales Police is at keeping people safe and reducing crime – giving an overall rating of “good”. The force is described as having “an excellent understanding of demand in all areas”. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The report ranked South Wales Police as “outstanding” for the way in which the force understands current and likely future demand. It was also ranked as “good” in terms of how well it uses its resources to meet its current demand and “good” for planning for future demand. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

HMIC found that South Wales Police:
• is good at understanding current and future demand;
• has realised the benefits of collaborative working and shared responsibility with partners; and
• has plans to identify gaps in the skills of officers and staff to meet the needs of the local community. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Deputy Chief Constable Matt Jukes said: “We are delighted the HMIC has recognised the way in which South Wales Police is listening and responding to the needs of our communities, meeting today’s demands but also planning and building for the demands of the future. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“The report highlights our effective operational approaches to keeping people safe, ensuring we have the right people in the right places with the best technology to meet the needs of our communities. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“All of this shows our strengths but we have to stay fit for the challenges of the future and we’re never complacent about the work that takes.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael said: “Today’s report reflects positively on all the hard work that has been done by our team in South Wales and I welcome the conclusions that we are very well prepared for future challenges. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“We continually look for innovative ways to deliver policing and to reduce crime in South Wales. I am particularly pleased that HMIC recognises that understanding the needs of the public is at the heart of our plan to deliver services. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“Our effective collaborative work with partners has also been highlighted which is extremely pleasing and helpful at a time when public services must shrink together, not shrink apart, on our journey to an even safer South Wales.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
