South Wales Police Remembers
Today, 11th November 2016, South Wales Police held its annual Remembrance Service at Police Headquarters in Bridgend, to honour all members of the armed forces who have given their lives in the line of duty and in particular those from its predecessor forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in two world wars.
All officers and staff were invited to observe a two minute silence, held at 11am. During the service, which was led by Chief Constable Peter Vaughan and Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael, wreaths were laid at the force’s war memorial.
As part of South Wales Police’s continuing commemoration of the centenary of the First World War the names of those police officers from the Glamorgan, Cardiff, Swansea and Merthyr forces who died during 1916 were read out. A booklet which acknowledges the sacrifice of each man was handed out to those in attendance and can be found here.
Following the two-minute silence a service also took place at the Force Memorial Garden, this time in memory of all police officers and members of police staff who have died whilst serving with South Wales Police.
During the service Chief Constable Peter Vaughan said:
“Today we remember the dedication of all service men and women. We pay tribute to those who have lost their lives and acknowledge the loss suffered by their families and loved ones. We will not forget”
Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael said:
“Today we pay our respects to all those who have lost their lives in service to their country and local communities. The wreaths that we have laid are just a small token of the gratitude we owe to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
