Creative Courses Involved In ‘ City Of The Unexpected’ This Weekend
Dr. Rob Smith, joint course leader in Performing Arts, has had a busy summer with the community jazz big band Wonderbrass (which he founded in 1992 and has led ever since). The band has performed at several festivals and public events over the summer such as Barry’s ‘Isle of Fire’, Truefest in Clyro, Mid-Wales, HUB festival in Cardiff and Festival Number 6 in Portmeirion, Gwynedd.
Wonderbrass’ busy summer comes to a climax over the next few days as the band takes part in ‘City of the Unexpected’ (Cardiff-wide celebration of the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth) on Saturday 17th and a re-enactment of Mardi Gras at the Gwdihŵ bar on Guildford Crescent on 20th September.
Rob Smith commented: “The City of the Unexpected performance is under wraps, otherwise it wouldn’t be unexpected, but our role in it is very big and very public – as will be the event itself. Tuesday’s Mardi Gras though will be a re-enactment of what we do every Mardi Gras with Wonderbrass bringing a lot of New Orleans-style swagger and the samba percussionists Barracŵda bringing the Brazilian salsa.”
In addition, BA (Hons) Illustration students are also involved in the event with an exhibition running from the 16th until the 23rd of September in The Emporium (opposite Cardiff Castle). There is no opening event but there is a Closing event on the on the 23rd from 6pm to 9pm.
The exhibition features the work of 10 USW Illustration students, with each one re-imagining a story of Roald Dahl’s, ranging from his well known children’s classics to his adult tales.
