Penarth Head Viewing Platform Reopens To The Public

THE Penarth Head Viewing Platform has now reopened after surveys confirmed it is safe for the public to enjoy. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

First opened in May 2015, the landmark feature, based on the Wales Coast Path’s shell-shaped logo, was forced to close after cracks appeared in one of the side walls along an expansion joint. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

But investigations into the structure have indicated it has not deteriorated further and there is also no evidence of any ground movement around the feature, meaning visitors are free to use it again. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The Council will continue to monitor the site and work with the contractors who constructed the platform to repair any cracking in the near future. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Fencing erected near the cliff edge will remain in place for safety reasons. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The viewing platform has been a long time in development. Penarth Tourism and Visitor Association (PTVA) suggested a landmark feature at Penarth Head Park around 2011. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

As part of a nationwide program of works to celebrate the opening of the Wales Coastal Path, a Welsh Government grant funded the project. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

The platform has a raised surface to improve visibility and allows wheelchair access with clear views over the boundary wall. ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​

Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “I’m delighted that the Penarth Head Viewing Platform is now open to the public again. It offers visitors a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some of the spectacular scenery along the Wales Coastal Path.” ‌​‌​‌​​​‍‌​‌​​‌‌‌‍‌​‌‌​​‌​‍‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‍‌​‌‌‌‌​​
